Applications Of Customized Slip Rings In Specialized Industrial Scenarios
Customized slip rings find applications across a wide range of sectors, from cutting-edge technology to heavy-duty equipment.
Wind Power: Wind turbine slip rings are critical components connecting rotating blades to the stationary nacelle, responsible for transmitting power, control signals, and data throughout the system. Given that turbines are often installed in harsh environments—such as high-altitude regions, offshore sites, or deserts—customized slip rings must feature high ingress protection ratings (e.g., IP68) and withstand intense vibration and extreme temperature fluctuations. For megawatt-class (MW) turbines, these slip rings require high circuit counts, high precision, and low noise; examples include Ethernet signal slip rings specifically customized for 5.0 MW offshore turbines.
Medical Equipment: In the medical field, customized slip rings are core components of high-end imaging and precision treatment equipment. For instance, CT scanners require large-bore, flat (pancake) slip rings—with inner diameters reaching up to 1.30 meters—to facilitate high-speed rotational scanning. Conversely, ophthalmic equipment may require compact through-bore rotary joints integrated with USB 2.0 channels. To meet stringent requirements for stability and signal integrity, these slip rings often utilize gold-on-gold contacts; some slip rings used in cardiac treatment applications can even operate at speeds of up to 8,000 rpm.
Robotics and Automation: From industrial robotic arms to humanoid robots, customized slip rings solve challenges related to cable tangling and restricted ranges of motion. In humanoid robots, they are embedded within space-constrained joints—such as wrists, elbows, and necks—to transmit drive power, servo signals, and sensor data. Industrial applications include flat (pancake) slip rings custom-designed for welding robots; these can feature a total height of less than 8 millimeters while enabling high-current transmission within an ultra-compact footprint. Additionally, in automation equipment like machine tools and packaging machinery, customized slip rings can simultaneously transmit real-time Ethernet signals at speeds up to 1 Gbps.
Aerospace and Defense: These sectors impose the most rigorous demands regarding slip ring reliability, precision, and environmental adaptability. On satellites, slip rings are utilized in Solar Array Drive Mechanisms (SADM) and for payload systems; in radar systems and electro-optical turrets, custom slip rings ensure the stable transmission of high-frequency signals and data. Military applications impose even more rigorous demands; for instance, custom high-frequency slip rings for Remote Weapon Stations (RWS) must feature superior ingress protection and exceptional shock resistance while withstanding harsh environments. Certain specialized slip rings are even required to operate reliably across an extreme temperature range of -55°C to +125°C.
Other specialized applications: The use of custom slip rings extends far beyond these examples. In marine engineering, they are employed in shipboard equipment and offshore cranes; in heavy machinery, they transmit critical safety signals for the rotating components of excavators; and in the food and beverage industry, they are used in filling machines that must operate in sterile environments. Additionally, to accommodate specific installation requirements, separable slip rings can be customized, allowing customers to manage the integration process themselves.
